National Curriculum - Swimming & Water Safety

As a part of the Physical Education Programme of Study, a statutory element of the National Curriculum, children must be provided with swimming instruction and should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke etc)
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations.

This is part of the Year 4 planned curriculum. However in academic year 21-22 in order to 'close gaps' from Covid related missed learning opportunities, both Year 4 and Year 5 children participated in swimming lessons. In the academic year 2021 - 2022, 72% of our children leaving us at the end of Year 6 met the requirements, expected of all children by the end of KS2 (Year 6).
