National Curriculum - Swimming & Water Safety

As a part of the Physical Education Programme of Study, a statutory element of the National Curriculum, children must be provided with swimming instruction and should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke etc)
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

This is part of the Year 4 planned curriculum, and is delivered as blocked teaching across a two-week period. During this time, all children will be immersed in a daily swimming session lasting up to an hour. Delivering teaching in this manner, we have found to be more effective in reducing any anxiety and building confidence, particularly amongst reluctant swimmers.82% of children in the academic year 2023 - 2024, leaving us at the end of Year 6, met the requirements expected of all children by the end of KS2.
